Cherokee Elementary Award
Cherokee was awarded a $10,000 award for our 2006-2007 academic performance. Alabama's state legislation and the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 require that the state's accountability plan include a system of rewards for schools that meet or exceed annual academic achievement expectations. Specifically, NCLB Section 1117(b)(1) requires that the state establish a program for making academic achievement awards to recognize schools that significantly close the achievement gap between subgroups of students or that exceed their AYP for tow or more consecutive years. A subcommittee of the Statewide Accountability Advisory Committee developed Alabama's Rewards and Sanctions Plan, which may be viewed on the Department Web site at www.alsde.edu on Accountability Reporting, then select school year 2006-07, and then select report.
